Urban Legend

I could not think of any Chinese urban legends that I know, so I searched it up online and found one called "Unexplained Disappearance of 3,000 Chinese troops near Nanking".

During the early stage of World War II, Japan invaded Nanking, and Chinese troop, trying to stop Japan's impending attack, built a defensive line on one end of a bridge on the Yangtze River. However, in the next morning, all 3,000 soldiers that were supposed to be there did not respond to the calls or signals from Colonel Li. When he went to the site to check, all soldiers were gone. There was no sign of fights taking place before, and all the guns are ready to fire. People did not know the reason for their disappearance. Some suspected that they ran away at night, but there is no report from the Japanese that confirms that they detected these Chinese soldiers. Plus, the area around the bridge is open and has little coverages. Therefore, the movement of 3,000 soldiers could easily be detected, but nobody says they saw anything.

The mystery is still unsolved. whether true or not, this urban legend reflects the fear and horror Chinese people experienced during WWII. It reminds me of the Rape of Nanking, in which more than 2 million innocent civilians were killed cruelly. People, who have heard of such news, were definitely living in fear. The misery of war still lives in people's mind today, but more importantly it allows us to cherish the relative peace we enjoy nowadays.
